Two men have been arraigned before the court on allegations of defrauding more than US$16 000 worth of soya beans.
The two were remanded in custody.
Daniel Phiri, 41, and James Gurupira, 53, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts on fraud allegations.
The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that on June 24, 2022, at Road Stapleford in Harare, together with Time and Sabhuku - who are still at large - negotiated with Mugwadi that he wanted to buy the soya beans on behalf of Clergy Swalops.
It is alleged that Phiri, in Mugwadi's presence, allegedly called Gurupira, who pretended to be Clergy Swalops and he answered as Clergy Swalops who was buying the soya beans and he promised to pay Mugwadi after receiving the soya beans.
The State alleges that Gurupira was given 25.6 tons of bulk soya beans and it was delivered to his neighbouring farm.
It is alleged that Mugwadi was given US$4 900 only. Phiri allegedly gave numerous excuses and then disappeared.
He was later arrested on January 1, 2024.
The value of the stolen soya beans is US$16 896 and only US$4 900 was recovered.
