A Harare magistrate has dismissed an application by former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi to alter his bail conditions, citing his failure to appear in court without justification.
Magistrate Donald Ndirowei ruled that Mzembi’s application was invalid, saying he had willfully defaulted and offered no medical or legal explanation for missing court.
Mzembi, represented by lawyer Killian Mandiki, had applied for the cancellation of outstanding arrest warrants. But the court heard that despite claiming changed circumstances, Mzembi had remained politically and socially active, including serving as Saviour Kasukuwere’s campaigner in 2023 and engaging actively on social media.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission arrested Mzembi for breaching bail conditions in two ongoing cases where he faces charges of theft of trust property.
An additional warrant of arrest remains active after he allegedly failed to return his passport on time, which had been temporarily released to him for travel.
