Despite recent struggles, Zimbabwe’s new interim coach Walter Chawaguta is buzzing with optimism ahead of their limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka starting this Saturday.
Coming off missed World Cup qualifications and a demoralising home series defeat to Ireland, the Chevrons desperately need a morale boost. This tour presents a crucial opportunity for redemption, a chance to turn the tides under Chawaguta's temporary leadership.
“It’s a fresh start for us,” declared Chawaguta, who previously served as head coach before returning in an interim capacity. “We’ve been through a rough patch, both as a team and as Zimbabwe Cricket. We haven’t played to expectations, but we're ready for a turnaround.”
The tour kicks off with three One-Day Internationals in Colombo on Saturday, 8th, and 11th January. Three T20 Internationals follow, all hosted at the iconic Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
Chawaguta’s confidence stems from a renewed focus and commitment within the squad. “We’ve had open discussions since the Bulawayo games,” he revealed. “Everyone’s determined to put the past behind us and show what we’re truly capable of.”
Though Sri Lanka will be no easy adversary, Zimbabwe holds onto the belief that unity and unwavering determination can pave the way for success. This crucial tour serves as a testing ground for Chawaguta’s temporary reign, and a potential springboard for Zimbabwe’s cricketing resurrection.
