A well-known Beitbridge smuggler, Simbarashe Nyongo, was handed 510 hours community service for violating Section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act Chapter 12:03 by Masvingo magistrate Maxwell Ngwerume.
The 35-year-old smuggler was sentenced for posing as a Malaitsha.
Nyongo, who was being represented by Frank Chirairo of Chirairo and Associates Legal Practitioners, was arrested on January 10, 2024 around 00:30am at Bubi Truck Stop in Mwenezi for smuggling 38 refrigerators, three 4-plate stoves and three microwaves.
The total value of the seized goods is ZWL$136 000 000.
All the goods were forfeited to the State. He will perform the community service at St Joseph Primary School in Beitbridge.
Edmore Mukono,37, the driver of the truck was also arrested for contravening Section 157 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 09:23 after he was found in possession of four wrapped bags of loose dagga.
The truck had a consignment of bond paper which had relevant documents.
