With by-elections are taking place in six National Assembly constituencies that were affected by recalls, namely Chegutu West, Goromonzi South, Zvimba East, Pelandaba-Tshabalala and Mkoba North attention is on the results from three constituencies where former Citizens Coalition for Change candidates are running as independents.
Willard Madzimbamuto (Seke), Admore Chivero (Chegutu West) and Oliver Mutasa decided to go independent in order to avoid being barred from the poll, the fate that befell peers Gift Ostallos Siziba (Pelandaba-Tshabalala), Amos Chibaya (Mkoba North) and Stephen Chagwiza (Goromonzi South).
Independent candidates have not fared well in Zimbabwe's elections as people vote mostly on party lines. No independent candidate made it in the 2023 general election. In the 2018 election only Temba Mliswa managed to win as an independent but he rode in on the opposition support.
Temba Mliswa recently said Nelson Chamisa support is crucial for candidates going against Zanu PF.
Disputed interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu yesterday got leave to execute the judgement barring Siziba, Chibaya and Chagwiza from running for the by-election, a position that has also affected Ian Makone and others in local authority by-elections.
