Court says abusive man has no right to beat up his wife

A man who excused his assault and harassment of his wife on the basis of being denied conjugal rights has been ordered to cease and desist his barbaric behavior by the court.

Simbarashe Chadzikaura told a magistrate at Harare Civil Court that he beat up his wife because of her behaviour.

"She is denying me my conjugal rights. She is coming home late and sends me messages that she no longer enjoys having sex with me," he said.

In her response, Faith Masocha said she had lost affection and desire because of Chadzikaura’s abuse.

“It is because l am tired of being insulted. He uses obscene language and it makes me lose feelings,” she said.

Masocha said her husband assaults her and calls her a woman of loose morals.

“He beats me. When l wake up early in the morning for work, he says I am going to sell my body,” said Masocha.

She said when she gets home after work, her woes continue unabated as he accuses her of having spent the day sleeping around.

“If I comment or respond to whatever he will be saying, he will beat me the whole night,” she said.

The magistrate granted the peace order in favor of Masocha barring Chadzikaura from assaulting and insulting her.
