Zimche bans the International Institute of Philanthropy from issuing degrees

Oscar J Jeke

The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education has banned the International Institute of Philanthropy from issuing honorary degrees without registering with the higher education body, noting that it is in violation of the country’s governing laws, hence should revoke publicly degrees already issued.

This comes as the institution has been awarding honorary degrees, while in contravention of set regulations guiding the issuance and awarding of higher education certificates, without registering with the governing body.

In a statement seen by Zim Now, Zimche said that the awarding of honorary degrees by the unregistered institution contravenes the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education Act, that prohibits any institution or college from offering degrees without accreditation by the council.

“The International Institute of Philanthropy is not authorised to award degrees in Zimbabwe as it is not a registered higher education institution. Therefore, the awarding of the degrees by the International Institute of Philanthropy is not only a violation of the laws of Zimbabwe, but also undermining the integrity of the entire higher education system in Zimbabwe.”

The education council also directed that the international institute publicly withdraw all awarded degrees and to stop any activity that violates the laws that govern higher education.

“The International Institute of Philanthropy should forthwith: Cease all activities that violate the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act, 2013, the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education Act (Chapter 25:27), the Manpower Planning and Development Act (Chapter 28:02) and the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23) and any other laws that regulate the education standards especially, the awarding of degrees and publicly withdraw all awarded degrees and inform all recipients accordingly,” Zimche added.
