African election observer networks seek to integrate AI in elections

Over 50 African election management bodies are set to convene for a conference on artificial intelligence and elections in Africa from March 16 to 17, in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The conference will focus on integrating AI in electoral processes.

The first-of-its-kind conference will see representatives from the African Union, civil society and election practitioners, and technology companies, discussing how AI can improve the conduct and enhance election processes in Africa.

In a statement seen by Zim Now, organisers of the conference said that over 20 countries are embarking on multi-level electoral exercises, with such activities prompting a need to focus on the role of AI-augmented electoral future in Africa.

“The conference will delve into the evolving applications of AI, such as voter register management, voter engagement through automated chat bots and use of facial recognition technologies.”

The conference also seeks to provide and come up with legal frameworks to regulate and guide use of AI in elections in Africa through the formation of working groups in different countries.

“A comprehensive outcome document will capture the nuanced opportunities and challenges AI presents in Africa’s electoral context. Additionally, a set of guiding principles for AI adoption will be formulated,” read the statement.

“The upcoming conference on artificial intelligence and elections in Africa represents a forward-looking endeavour to maximise the potential technology and inhibit the manipulation of AI to undermine election integrity, information integrity and democracy,” the statement continued.
