The roar of the crowd echoed through Mosi-oa-Tunya High School in Victoria Falls this week as talented young athletes battled it out at the National Association of Secondary Heads Athletics Championships.

The two-day event, which concluded on Thursday, wasn’t just about crowning champions; it was a vibrant showcase of raw talent and a breeding ground for Zimbabwe’s next generation of track and field stars.

Beyond the thrill of competition, the NASH Athletics Championships served as a crucial platform for identifying future national representatives. Top performers will be scouted to compete for Zimbabwe at the upcoming Confederation of Schools Sports Association of Southern Africa games scheduled for August in Bulawayo.

“The energy was electric!” exclaimed Jabulani Mpofu, Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director. “We witnessed exceptional performances across all age groups. This event remains a cornerstone for scouting talent that will propel Zimbabwe’s sporting future. The government is committed to supporting this initiative, not only to nurture young athletes but also to select representatives for COSSASA. The potential we've seen here is remarkable, and with proper training and guidance, these athletes could soon be gracing the international stage.”

Organisers expressed their satisfaction with the smooth running of the event. “Mosi-oa-Tunya High School is honoured to have hosted this prestigious event for the first time in Victoria Falls,” said  Rolland Sibanda, NASH Head in Charge of Athletics.

“The event has also served as a catalyst for improvements to our sporting facilities, which will benefit our school tremendously.”

Mashonaland West emerged victorious, claiming a total of 19 gold medals. Harare Province followed closely with 15 gold medals, while Mashonaland East and Masvingo secured 14 and 13 gold medals respectively. The NASH Athletics Championships not only delivered a captivating display of athletic prowess but also promised a bright future for Zimbabwean athletics, with a new generation of stars ready to take centre stage
