Ernest Nyatanga is a man of many hats: a dedicated teacher, a passionate filmmaker, and a seasoned theatre enthusiast. His journey, fuelled by an unwavering determination, exemplifies the power of chasing one’s dreams across various creative fields.

Nyatanda’s artistic inclinations were evident from a young age. While his first foray into acting involved portraying a cow in primary school, his high school years witnessed a blossoming of his theatrical talents. Inspired by legendary figures like Never Japi and Mutirowafanza, he nurtured his skills and honed his craft.

Nyatanda’s pursuit of knowledge took him to Cuba, where he acquired a Bachelor of Education qualification. However, his passion for acting remained undimmed. He actively participated in the college theatre scene, establishing the Limbe Presenters group - a homage to the renowned Norton Theatre act. Even in Cuba, his creative spirit thrived, leading him to produce Spanish-language skits and a captivating short documentary film chronicling his Cuban experiences.

Upon returning to Zimbabwe, Nyatanga’s artistic fire continued to burn brightly. He seized an opportunity to act in a short film titled “Lessons from a Madman,” produced by a visiting SOS UK team. This experience proved to be a stepping stone, propelling him to establish the Ngoma Yorira Theatre Association in 2015. This platform served as a launch-pad for many aspiring actors, including Nargee, now a prominent figure in the popular drama Estate Blues.

Nyatanga’s most impactful role came in the form of a lead character in the short film My Kind Heart has Cost Me, written by Fatima Phiri. The film’s repeated airings on ZTV cemented his place in the Zimbabwean film industry.

Driven by a deep faith, Nyatanga finds strength and perseverance in his belief system. “God the Almighty is on my side,” he declares. “I do not have failure in my vocabulary.” This unwavering optimism fuels his relentless pursuit of his goals.

His creative vision extends beyond theatre and film. In 2018, he brought the Africa Network Television to life. This brainchild, now boasting over 36 000 followers on Facebook, serves as a testament to his dedication to broadcasting. The channel, registered under Prenest Holdings, has become a platform for showcasing local talent.

Nyatanga’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Financial constraints are a constant hurdle in the film industry, and ANT grapples with limitations in acquiring live streaming equipment and monetising its social media presence. Yet, Nyatanga and his team persevere, their unwavering commitment keeping the channel afloat.

The international recognition garnered by ANT is a source of immense pride for Nyatanga. “Coming up with such an initiative which is recognised in Zimbabwe and the rest of Africa is something that really motivates,” he beams.

His artistic achievements are not limited to the screen. Since 2016, Nyatanga has received numerous accolades in the theatre industry. A notable highlight was the play My Cuba, a captivating portrayal of his student life in Cuba, which attracted attendance from officials of various embassies in Harare.

Nyatanga’s professional life is equally diverse. He skillfully navigates the world of banking as a full-time Training Officer, while also sharing his knowledge as a Spanish tutor. His expertise extends to HR consultancy, customer care, and even accredited training in Protective Behaviours.

Currently, Nyatanga is engrossed in the production of My Kind Heart has Cost Me Part 2 and revamping ANT’s programming schedule. His dedication is truly inspiring.

A message to aspiring theatre artists resonates from Nyatanga: “Follow your gut. It is something that is interesting and really fulfilling. You just need to be focused and never allow for any distractions nor discouragements.”
