Beyond the wheel: The musical life of bus driver Evans Muchemwa

Evans Muchemwa may seem like your average bus driver, navigating passengers across borders on a daily basis. But beneath the surface lies a man of extraordinary talent and passion - a skilled acapella performer who fills his spare time with music. Muchemwa’s story is a testament to the power of balancing career and creativity, proving that one can be more than just their job title.

Hailing from the rural village of Nongwe in Mutoko, Zimbabwe, Muchemwa’s journey began at Kawazva Primary School and continued at Nyamuzuwe Rural Secondary School. The youngest of six siblings, his determination to carve his own path led him to obtain a driver’s licence with the support of loved ones. He started by driving for local companies, patiently waiting to reach the required age for a class one licence, which would unlock his dream of cross-border travel.

In 2010, Muchemwa embarked on a new chapter, driving long-haul routes to Johannesburg, Kimberly, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town. He navigates dusty farm roads during harvest seasons, transporting Zimbabwean workers back home. His passengers are a diverse mix - business people, students, and families - each with their own stories.

The challenges of the road are undeniable. Muchemwa grapples with corrupt law enforcement officers who demand bribes at checkpoints, a constant worry that eats into his earnings for his family. Yet, he finds solace in the vital service he provides, connecting people across borders.

“Police along the way always think that we have money,” Muchemwa says. “They demand a lot, such that we end up going home with little or sometimes nothing for the family.”

Despite the hurdles, Muchemwa cherishes his job. It offers him a glimpse into the world, fostering new connections and cultural experiences. He believes that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success, encouraging young people to chase their dreams and find fulfilment in their chosen paths.

“Young people should stay away from drugs and follow their dreams,” Muchemwa emphasises. “It’s not everyone who is gifted for office work. Some will have to hustle, so they have to work extra hard to earn a better life.”

Beyond his driving skills, Muchemwa holds a unique talent - acapella performance. Inspired by renowned artists like Tongai Moyo and the group Vabati VaJehova, he dreams of forming his own band. However, the music industry’s financial demands pose a significant obstacle.

“I wish if I can manage to record a few songs,” Muchemwa aspires. “That way, I can source sponsors and keep my talent alive.”

Muchemwa’s entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond music. He utilises his cross-border travel to engage in buying and selling clothes and groceries, showcasing his resourceful nature.

Evans Muchemwa is a multi-faceted individual who embodies the spirit of a modern-day hustler. He is a skilled driver, a talented musician, and a budding entrepreneur, proving that passion and perseverance can thrive even amid the call of a demanding job.
