Zimbabwean athletes are basking in the afterglow of their impressive performance at the 2023 African Games, returning home to a hero’s welcome and government bonuses.
The team secured a total of 11 medals, including three gold, four silver, and four bronze. This achievement marks a significant improvement from the past two editions of the games, as highlighted by the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Honourable Kirsty Coventry.
The government’s commitment to supporting athletes was evident in their bonus structure. Gold medalists received US$1 000 each, silver medalists US$800, and bronze medalists US$600.
Athletes expressed their appreciation for this recognition. Josephine Nkomo, the Lady Chevrons vice captain, emphasised the significance of the welcome reception and the financial rewards. Kudakwashe Nyamakura, a Sevens Rugby team member, highlighted the motivating effect of the bonuses, demonstrating the potential for a viable sporting career in Zimbabwe.
With the African Games glory still fresh, some athletes are already setting their sights on the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This unwavering focus bodes well for Zimbabwe’s continued success on the international sporting stage.
The fruitful collaboration between the government’s strategic support and the athletes’ dedication paves the way for a promising future for Zimbabwean sports.
