University of Zimbabwe over the weekend played host to a two-day national handball tournament with teams from Harare, Bindura and Bulawayo.
Nine men’s teams and six women teams took part in the tournament.
In an interview with Zim Now, competition director Tafadzwa Mutemererwa said the tournament aims to develop the game to a higher level.
“The goal of the tournament is to bring handball as a sport to the top of the ladder and make it known to the whole nation at large.
“It is the first edition and we are expecting more to come,” he said.
Mutemererwa hopes such tournaments will bring more sponsors to the sport and have a national league.
Individual awards were up for grabs, including the most valuable player, top goal scorer, best goalkeeper, most disciplined team and medals for positions one to three among others.
Tigers coach, Innocent Kanosvova said the tournament is not just about winning, it’s also about the spirit of the game.
“This tournament is about the love of the game and the unbreakable bond between teammates.”
The tournament was sponsored by TG Tournament.
