The coming of the rains is usually a blessing for many communities that survive on rain-fed agriculture. However, this may not be the case with some parts of Zhombe in Kwekwe District where hailstorms left a trail of destruction.

There were no injuries reported when the storms hit Simana Secondary and St Joseph Primary schools.

The hailstorms which blew off roofs at the learning institutions, took place at different times.

Kwekwe District Development Coordinator, who is also the Civil Protection Unit chairperson, Fortune Mpungu said St Joseph Primary School was hit last Wednesday while the other incident at Simana Secondary School happened earlier last month.

“St Joseph Primary experienced a hailstorm which also happened when students were in class, but there were no injuries recorded. Roofs were blown off and the estimated cost of property destroyed is valued at US$2 800,” said Mpungu, who is also.

“On 10 October, a hailstorm ravaged through Simana Secondary and destroyed classroom blocks blowing off the roof in the process. The incident took place when classes were in session but we are thankful that there were no learners or teachers who were injured in the process.”

Mpungu urged schools to continuously inspect buildings and infrastructure ahead of the rainy season.
