The Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Kirsty Coventry, has officially sanctioned Themba Magorimbo, a Mixed Martial Arts fighter, to proudly display the Zimbabwean flag colours on his kit.
Magorimbo had previously fought with the South African flag.
In a letter issued by the Sports and Recreation Commission, Magorimbo was informed of the authorisation to put the Zimbabwean flag on his kit during MMA events.
“The Sports and Recreation Commission is pleased to advise that the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Hon. Kirsty Coventry, has authorised you to wear the national colours of Zimbabwe during Mixed Martial Arts competitions and related events. The approved colours are as presented in your application. Kindly note that any change in the kit will require our prior approval,” stated Gerald Mlotshwa, SRC Chairman.
Magorimbo expressed his gratitude and joy over the approval on social media, specifically on X
“I am truly grateful and happy that my voice has been heard, and I now have the privilege of representing my country with the Zimbabwean flag on my fight kit going forward. This is monumental. As an athlete in @ufc, it feels incredible to see your country’s flag on your gear. This is part of the story and history. Thank you to everyone who played a part,” Magorimbo exclaimed.
