A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court after he was found guilty of engaging in sex with a young person.
It is alleged that sometime in October 2023, the accused person proposed love to the 15-year-old complainant and she accepted the proposal.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, on March 19, 2024, the complainant stole her sister-in-law’s house keys which had been left in her mother’s care and went and slept in the house without her sister-in-law’s knowledge.
“The following day she took the accused person to the said house where they engaged in sexual relations overnight. The complainant’s mother found the complainant in the house on the 22nd of March.
“When asked what she was doing there, she revealed that she had been intimate with the accused person. A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person,” the NPA said.
He was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment of which six months was suspended for five years.
The NPA has reminded the public that it is a criminal offence to have sexual relations with a young person under the age of 18 whether they are female or male.
