Old Stars ‘Madhara EPrezha’ FC lift Damview Uhuru Cup

It was all thrill and excitement as Old Stars “Madhara EPrezha) Football Club trounced Magnum Football Club 3-0 in the final yesterday to lift the Damview Uhuru Cup at Damview Stadium in Chitungwiza.

Old Stars, had Walter “Chimudhara” Magura, Brian Makumbe, who emerged tournament top goal-scorer, Terrence Makosa, Edward “Swara”  Tembenuka, Tapiwa Mlambo, Washington Kanhukamwe and former Poland-based player, Robert Zvomuya among others, in their side.

“We are a serious team and wanted to retain this trophy since we won it last year at Chibuku Stadium. This probably explains why we emerged winners again this time around,” said the team’s organising secretary, Gweza “Baba Fadzi” Chigweremba.

Coached by Chris Chahwanda, Old Stars easily overcame their opponents whom they were leading 2-0 at halftime, before they added another after the break to emerge 3-0 victors.

Old Stars secretary-general, Tonderai Munetsi said they could not have gone wrong as this is their celebratory year.

“We are celebrating Old Stars’ 20 years in existence this year and we could not have lost. Buoyed by this win, we are looking forward to taking part regional social soccer tournaments. Last year, we were in Zambia and South Africa and we want to make this list of regional countries longer as we grow into the best social soccer club in Zimbabwe,” said Munetsi.

The club SG added that they are integrating younger retiring players into the team, who are replacing the older ones.

“Old Stars are, without doubt, going to be the best social soccer side in the country. We have a tournament slated for June 29 here at Damview to mark our 20 years in existence as Old Stars FC. Teams from the regions are already involved in qualifiers where only four teams will qualify for the finals,” he added.

Damview Sports director, Calvin Nduku said he is excited about the success of this tournament, which goes into showing that they are indeed a venue of choice.

“We are pleased that Damview cintinues to host successful tournaments in different sporting disciplines from pool, netball, soccer and rugby among others,” Nduku said.

The Damview Uhuru Cup was handed over to the winners by Charigwai directors, Alfred Mumba and Taurai Charigwai.

Located at Damview Hotel, adjacent Guzha Shopping Centre – Chikwanha – along the Harare Makoni Road in Chitungwiza, Damview Stadium has become a venue of choice for most sporting events due to its easy accessibility as well as the assortment of facilities and other entertainment activities the joint offers.

Zimbabwe celebrates Independence Day on April 18 annually and this year, was marking its 44th anniversary, with activities to commemorate the day taking place in venues across the country
