A Harare man will get a monthly allowance from his former wife to help him look after three of the couple’s children who are in his custody.
John Gumbo sued Cynthia Chaendepi at the Harare Civil Court.
“I want ZWL 100 000 for the children from her.
“She has to assist me in taking care of the children,” he said.
The couple has five children together, of whom Gumbo has custody of three and Cynthia is living with the other two.
Gumbo told the court that he had applied for custody of the three children because he felt he was the best parent to take care of them.
“I was not happy with the conditions they were living in when they were with their mother,” he said
Gumbo said he was not formally employed, but wanted what is best for his children and currently spends ZWL 300 000 monthly on the children.
Cynthia told the court that it was a huge amount considering the fact that she has two children to take care of.
“I am not offering anything,” she said.
Chaendepi said that her former husband was making unfounded allegations that could destroy her relationship with the three children in his custody.
“He tells my children not to use anything that l buy for them claiming that I would have bewitched those things,” she said.
Chaendepi said her relationship with her former husband had become so toxic that he barred her from visiting the children he is living with.
“He told me that l should bring as escort if l wanted to visit my children,” she added.
The magistrate asked Gumbo if was in a position to contribute the same amount as he was asking for to his former wife to help look after the two children that she has in her care.
“I am prepared, because l give food to those children at times,” he said.
The court ordered Cynthia Chaendepi to pay John Gumbo a monthly maintenance allowance of ZWL 40 000 with effect from 31 November.
