Internationally acclaimed dub poet Albert Nyathi is set to headline the Inkaba Festival—an African-themed celebration of cultural roots—in two UK cities this August.
Nyathi departed Zimbabwe on Wednesday afternoon for Europe, where he’ll perform at the London leg of the festival on 3 August before heading to Birmingham for the second show on 9 August.
“Inkaba means umbilical cord,” he explained before boarding his flight at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. “This festival is about reconnecting Africans in the diaspora to the continent—symbolically tying them back to their cultural roots.”
A Poetic Farewell and a Moment of Reflection
Before taking off, Nyathi paused to express condolences to the victims of the recent Chitungwiza road accident, which claimed multiple lives.
“My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he said, visibly moved.
More Than Just Another Gig
While Nyathi has performed on countless stages worldwide, he says this festival carries special significance.
“I’ve attended too many international festivals to count,” he said. “But this one is unique. It’s intentionally Afrocentric. It’s about attracting our people—from Zimbabwe and across Africa—to celebrate African talent and identity.”
When asked to name Zimbabwean artists who’ve made a strong impression internationally, Nyathi hesitated with a chuckle.
“It’s hard to pick! But I’d say groups like Mokoomba and Black Umfolosi have done exceptionally well. They’re rooted in traditional music—Tonga rhythms, isicathamiya, imbube—and they bring something rare and authentic to the world stage.”
He also paid tribute to the late Stella Chiweshe and Chiwoniso Maraire, saying their mbira music “thrilled the world” and left a lasting legacy.
Artist, Academic, Ambassador
In addition to his storied artistic career, Nyathi holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree, adding intellectual weight to his cultural advocacy.
“Art is powerful, but it must also be informed. I’m proud of both my creative and academic journeys,” he said as he walked toward his boarding gate at exactly 11:30am.
