Zimbabwe’s tourism sector is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, according to Zivai Mhetu, Member of Parliament for Epworth North constituency.

Recent data reveals a significant 22% increase in tourism receipts, reaching a staggering US$1.1 billion in 2023.

International tourist arrivals have also surged to 1.6 million, marking a substantial recovery from the crippling effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The positive trajectory, according to Mhetu, signifies more than just a rebound for the industry; it highlights its resilience and potential for further growth.

Tourism is traditionally a critical sector for Zimbabwe’s economy, ranking as the third-largest currency earner after mining and agriculture.

Mhetu sees this as an opportunity for the nation. Given the challenges currently faced by those traditional sectors, he proposes a strategic pivot towards making tourism a cornerstone of Zimbabwe's development and prosperity.

“By investing more in tourism and dealing with issues that hold the sector back, such as rising crime rates and currency instability, we can position ourselves to become a major tourist destination, rivalling the likes of Dubai,” Mhetu said.

He acknowledges the undeniable allure of Zimbabwe’s natural wonders, like the majestic Victoria Falls, but emphasises the need to go beyond. Mhetu suggests the development of man-made attractions, similar to Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay and Supertree Grove, to further entice visitors.

The legislator highlighted the importance of capitalising on Zimbabwe’s greatest asset, its people.

“Our naturally hospitable population is a key selling point,” he said.

“We need to effectively market this warmth and hospitality when promoting Zimbabwe as a tourist destination.”

Mhetu believes that, with a robust recovery well underway, the country has a chance to leverage its strengths and address its shortcomings to become a premier tourist destination in Africa and beyond.
