A 24-year-old man from Gutu was sentenced to 36 years’ imprisonment by the Masvingo Magistrates’ Courts for one count of robbery and another of rape.

On September 27, 2023, in Gutu, Alison Muyambo forced one of the occupants to open the complainant’s door after the complainant who was inside the house with her brothers-in-law, had initially refused to allow him access.

He went straight to the bedroom where he ransacked the room in search of money and other valuables.

He could not find money therefore he took the complainant’s cellphone.

The accused person ordered the complainant to remove her clothes but she refused.

He slapped the complainant once forcing her to remove her clothes for fear of further assault. He ordered her to put her clothes back on and dragged her outside.

After walking about half a kilometre, Muyambo tripped the complainant to the ground where he raped her once without protection. He freed her after the rape.

After hearing her ordeal, fellow villagers effected a citizen’s arrest and handed him over to the police.

He was sentenced to 36 years’ imprisonment for both counts of which six years were suspended.

He will serve 30 years effectively.
