Zambian power utility Zesco announces 12-hour staggered load-shedding for Lusaka

Zambia’s power utility, the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation, has released a 12-hour staggered loadshedding for the country’s capital, Lusaka.

This comes as the southern African country along with others in the region, is experiencing severe power shortages, which have been worsened by reduced generation capacity at Kariba Dam, which it shares with neighbours, Zimbabwe.

Low water levels in the Kariba Dam, which have ben made worse by the low rainfall season on the southern African region due to the El Nino phenomenon.

In a load shedding  schedule update for Lusaka, Zesco’s corporate affairs department yesterday advised customers to us available power sparingly.

“This approach aims to minimise the impact on customers as much as possible. Comprehensive schedules for other areas will be announced later. Zesco acknowledges the challenges this situation presents and encourages everyone to adopt energy-efficient practices to alleviate pressure on the grid and ensure power availability for critical infrastructure,” Zesco said in a customer notice.

Besides urging customers to turn off all lights and electronics when not in use, Zesco added: “Businesses can also play a critical role by implementing energy-saving lighting systems, upgrading to  more efficient equipment and encouraging employees to power down electronics after work,” said the Zambian power utility.
