Zimbabwe ended the opening day of the first Test on Thursday against Afghanistan in a commanding position, but beyond Brendan Taylor’s remarkable century, it was the emergence of a new leadership era that provided one of the biggest talking points in Sharjah.

At just 22, Brian Bennett took charge of the national side for the first time and responded with an unbeaten 71 to guide Zimbabwe to 326 for five at stumps on Thursday, putting the visitors in a promising position after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Bennett’s elevation to the captaincy came after regular skipper Richard Ngarava was ruled out through injury, handing the young all-rounder an unexpected opportunity to lead the side. Rather than allowing the responsibility to weigh him down, he produced a composed innings that demonstrated maturity beyond his years.

His contribution was particularly important after Taylor’s departure for a brilliant 131, ensuring Zimbabwe maintained their momentum instead of allowing Afghanistan to regain control during the closing stages.

Taylor, meanwhile, provided the foundation for Zimbabwe’s impressive total, rediscovering his best form with an authoritative innings that featured 14 fours and four sixes. The veteran reached his century from 135 deliveries and eventually equalled his highest Test score before falling to Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Zimbabwe’s innings was built on patience and calculated aggression, with Ben Curran contributing 42 from 113 balls in an opening partnership of 60 with Innocent Kaia, who made 34.

The dismissal of Curran at 125 for two brought Bennett to the crease, and his partnership with Taylor proved decisive in shifting the balance firmly towards Zimbabwe. The pair added valuable runs before Taylor departed with the scoreboard reading 251 for three.

Although Afghanistan managed to make further inroads through Zia-ur-Rehman, who finished with two wickets, Zimbabwe avoided a late collapse.

Craig Ervine managed just four, while Test debutant Antum Naqvi scored nine before falling to a leg-side delivery. Their dismissals briefly threatened to slow Zimbabwe's progress, but Wessly Madhevere ensured the visitors finished the day strongly.

Madhevere remained unbeaten on 29 from 31 deliveries, providing the support Bennett needed as the pair added valuable runs in the final session.

The match also marked an important milestone for Naqvi, who made his Test debut, while veteran leg-spinner Graeme Cremer returned to the longest format for the first time since December 2017.

Zimbabwe will take considerable confidence from their first-day performance, particularly given the conditions in Sharjah. The surface is expected to become increasingly difficult for batting as the match progresses, making the decision to bat first an important one.

With five wickets still intact and Bennett looking increasingly assured at the crease, Zimbabwe have laid a solid platform from which to push towards a substantial first-innings total.
