Brian Bennett marked his first Test match as Zimbabwe captain with a magnificent century, guiding his side to an imposing total of 504 all out on the second day of the Test against Afghanistan in Sharjah on Friday.

Afghanistan responded positively to the challenging total, reaching 113 for one at stumps to trail Zimbabwe by 391 runs, with both Rahmanullah and Sediqullah Atal unbeaten after an encouraging partnership.

Zimbabwe resumed the day on 326 for five, with Bennett unbeaten on 71 and Wessly Madhevere on 29. The pair continued their impressive partnership, steadily adding runs to strengthen Zimbabwe's position.

Madhevere was the first to reach his half-century, bringing up the milestone off 65 deliveries. However, his innings ended shortly afterwards when he edged a bouncer from Ziaur Rahman through to the wicketkeeper while attempting to evade the delivery. He departed for a well-made 54 off 70 balls, including a partnership of 96 runs with Bennett, leaving Zimbabwe on 383 for six.

Bennett continued to dominate, finding valuable support from Tafadzwa Tsiga. The Zimbabwe captain brought up his maiden Test century as skipper off 178 balls, underlining his importance to the side with a composed and determined innings.

By lunchtime, Zimbabwe had progressed to 421 for six, with Bennett unbeaten on 123 and Tsiga on 13.

Bennett's outstanding innings eventually came to an end after the interval when he mistimed a delivery from Qais Ahmad and skied the ball towards cover, where Zia-ur-Rehman took a good catch. He departed for 128 off 206 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries, with Zimbabwe at 437 for seven.

Tsiga continued to contribute valuable runs, playing more aggressively alongside Graeme Cremer before falling leg before wicket to Qais Ahmad for 44, with the score on 472.

Zimbabwe's lower order then worked to push the total beyond the 500-run mark. Newman Nyamhuri managed eight before being dismissed by Mohammad Saleem at 498 for nine, while Cremer and Blessing Muzarabani carefully took the score past the milestone.

Muzarabani added a boundary before Saleem bowled him two deliveries later, bringing Zimbabwe's innings to an end at 504. Cremer remained unbeaten on 34, while Saleem finished as Afghanistan's leading bowler with three wickets for 82 runs.

Afghanistan's reply began with some nervous moments as Muzarabani immediately troubled opening batter Sediqullah Atal. An edge flew past gully for four before a catching opportunity at short leg was missed.

Atal survived another scare in Muzarabani's second over when Madhevere appeared to take a low catch at third slip. The decision was referred to the third umpire, but replays could not conclusively establish whether the catch had been completed, allowing the batter to continue.

Afghanistan reached tea on eight without loss after three overs. Zimbabwe eventually made the breakthrough when Nyamhuri dismissed Abdul Malik for two, with the batter attempting to hook a leg-side delivery only to edge behind to Tsiga, who took a fine catch. Afghanistan were reduced to 14 for one.

However, Atal recovered from his early struggles and settled into a promising partnership with Rahmanullah. The pair showed patience and determination against Zimbabwe's bowling attack, which also turned to the spin of Madhevere and Cremer in an effort to make further inroads.

Rahmanullah reached his half-century first, taking 78 balls to reach the milestone, before Atal followed with his own fifty off 101 deliveries.

The two batters remained unbeaten at the close of play, with Atal on 55 and Rahmanullah on 50 as Afghanistan finished the day on 113 for one.

Despite Afghanistan's encouraging response, Zimbabwe remain firmly in control of the contest, holding a substantial first-innings advantage of 391 runs heading into the third day.
