A 19-year-old man accused of robbing a woman of her phone and cash in Belvedere has appeared in court after the getaway car crashed into a precast wall.
Tinashe Mupanduki appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing robbery allegations.
His alleged accomplice, identified as Tafadzwa Gurure, is still at large.
Prosecutor Tendai Tapi told the court that on October 23, 2026, the complainant was walking home along Vicas Road in Belvedere when a Toyota Mark X, registration number ABD 9031, driven by Mupanduki approached from behind.
The vehicle stopped, and Gurure allegedly got out, grabbed the complainant, struck her elbow with an unknown object and snatched her Redmi 15 phone, which had US$140 stashed in its back pouch.
The complainant tried to hold on to Gurure but was overpowered and fell to the ground.
Gurure then jumped back into the vehicle, and the pair sped off.
The complainant sought help from neighbours, and two motorists joined the chase.
The getaway car subsequently crashed into a precast wall, leading to Mupanduki’s arrest, while Gurure escaped.
The total value of the stolen property was US$420.
Mupanduki was remanded in custody pending trial as police continue efforts to arrest his alleged accomplice.
