A Nyabira men is lucky to have lived to regret giving a lift to two hitchhikers that he picked up along the Harare- Chirundu highway.
“ZRP Banket is investigating a case of Robbery of a green Mazda Premacy registration number AFF 0188 which occurred on the 27th day of May 2024 at 85km peg along Harare-Chirundu road at around 1915 hours,” said Mash West police in a statement.
Graduate Chiwenga, 33, of New stands, Nyabira was driving from Chikuti to Nyabira and picked two men who said were going to Batch farm in Banket.
Before reaching their purported destination, the man seated at the back said he needed to relieve himself and Chiwenga stopped the car.
The man immediately got hold of the gear lever and engaged reverse gear. The man who was seated at the front passenger seat sprayed Chiwenga with unknown powder on the face.
The man at the back was holding Chiwenga tightly restraining him against the seat back, but Chiwenga managed to open the door and escape from the moving vehicle.
He fled into the nearby bush and the hijackers turned the car around and towards Chikuti.
Police are appealing for any leads to the suspects and the missing vehicle and have warned drivers against picking up hitchhikers:
“Police also continue to urge motorists to avoid offering lifts to strangers and the general public are reminded to avoid boarding vehicles they do not know especially those plying mushika-shika”
