A 24-year-old gardener and a 59-year-old maid have appeared in court accused of stealing more than US$80 000 and other valuables from their employer’s home in Harare.
Milton Mudimu, 24, and Sarah Matemarura, 59, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with theft. They were remanded in custody.
The court heard that on August 10, 2025, the complainant left for his farm, leaving only the gardener and the maid at the property.
The following day, the maid phoned the complainant, reporting that the gardener was missing and had not informed her of his whereabouts, which resulted in the fowl run being left without chicken feed.
The complainant attempted to contact the gardener, but his calls went unanswered.
On August 12, upon returning home, the complainant discovered his bedroom door ajar, despite having locked it before leaving. Inside, he found that his wall-mounted digital safe had been forcibly removed.
Stolen items included US$80 400 in cash, live rounds of ammunition, R4 000, 300 Yuan, 200 Dirhams, 100 Rupees, and £30.
The complainant reported the matter to police. A search at the property later led to the recovery of the digital safe, which had been dumped inside the boot of his son’s Honda Fit.
Inside were live rounds of ammunition and Zimbabwean passports.
The maid was interrogated and subsequently led police to the recovery of US$12 391, R1 360, £10, 50 Rupees, 5 Dirhams, and 100 Yuan, which she had hidden in her monarch. She then implicated the gardener.
The gardener was later arrested in South Africa, where he had fled illegally in an attempt to evade capture.
He, in turn, implicated the maid and some of the complainant’s relatives living near the border, who assisted in his arrest.
The total value stolen amounts to US$80 400, R4 000, 300 Yuan, 200 Dirhams, 100 Rupees, and £30.
Of this, US$12 391, R1 360, £10, 50 Rupees, 5 Dirhams, and 100 Yuan were recovered.
