Zimbabwean football fans have reason to celebrate as young prospect Leon Chiwome inked a new contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers, keeping him at the prestigious English Premier League club until 2028.
The 18-year-old striker, already a teammate of Warriors star Tawanda Chirewa, impressed enough to earn a deal with a potential one-year extension.
Chiwome joined Wolves' academy just two years ago from AFC Wimbledon and wasted no time making his mark.
His impressive performances not only secured him a place in the first team towards the end of last season, but also saw him featuring in three Premier League matches, including two starts.
While with the under-21s, Chiwome continued to shine, netting three goals in nine appearances.
This move is a significant boost for Zimbabwean football. Chiwome, honing his skills in arguably the world's most competitive league, has the potential to become a valuable asset for the Warriors.
Although yet to officially commit to the national team, his call-up for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers last year ignited hope among fans.
Born in the UK to a Zimbabwean father, Chiwome has represented England at various junior levels.
However, the Warriors faithful are eager to see him follow Chirewa's lead and embrace his Zimbabwean heritage. With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approaching in September, Chiwome's inclusion in the squad seems highly likely.
Zimbabwe itself is gearing up for a grand return to the Afcon qualifiers after a ban forced them to miss the previous competition.
The draw for the qualification groups will be held on July 4th, with the Warriors hoping for a favorable path to the finals staged in Morocco next year.
Their journey back to continental glory begins in September, with the qualifiers stretching across three international windows until November.
Chiwome's commitment to Wolves and his blossoming talent offer a glimpse of a bright future for both the young player and Zimbabwean football.
