A 22-year-old Kariba fisherman was on Sunday attacked and killed by a crocodile, which mysteriously pulled him out of a dingy boat before dragging him underwater at Musena, also known as Kumafiriji, near Muchenga.
The deceased was identified as of Nyamhunga Suburb, who was fishing on the iconic Kariba Dam around 2am.
Reports say the crocodile attack was mysterious because it is unusual for the reptiles don't normally attack go after targets aboard moving boats.
A Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) official, who requested anonymity as they are not authorised to speak to the media said: “During this rainy season, crocodiles are laying eggs and are very aggressive and bound to act abnormally.”
A family relative, Admore Mbonda confirmed Mudyavi's death.
ZimParks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo has previously been quoted attributing the spike in crocodile attacks to destruction of their habitats by humans and competition for fish.
Twenty-eight people were killed and 20 injured in crocodile attacks in 2020 alone, while in 2021, four deaths and 23 injuries were recorded.
The statistics could be higher as some incidents, especially those that take place in remote areas go unreported.
