A woman who could no longer stomach her husband's refusal to migrate to South Africa decided to have him beaten into fear for his life if he remained in Zimbabwe.

A member of the Zimbabwe National Army, Sikumbuzo Hakata, 38, of Dzivarasekwa 2, is facing assault charges after he threatened and assaulted Tinashe Gwitima to leave the country and relocate to South Africa.

Hakata appeared before magistrate Apollonia Marutya at the Harare Magistrates' Courts accused of assault.

Hakata connived with the complainant's wife, Winnie Munangatire who told Hakata to threaten Gwitima saying that if he continued living in Zimbabwe, his life would be in danger since she wanted to go to South Africa with him to look for greener pastures.

The State, through prosecutor Thomas Chanakira, alleges that on August 4, 2023, at around 0050 hours, as per arrangement, Hakata teamed up with two unknown men who are still at large and went to Gwitima's residence in Belvedere West, Harare.

The trio was let by in by Munangatire.

The court heard that Hakata immediately hit Gwitima on the face using an open hand.

He accused him of sponsoring the Citizens Coalition for Change party.

It is alleged that Hakata's accomplices intervened and continued assaulting Gwitima using open hands and poured water on him.

Hakata then ordered Gwitima to leave the country with immediate effect or risk being continuously assaulted.

He sustained no visible injuries.

The court was also informed that on October 11, 2023, Hakata was informed that Gwitima had returned from South Africa.

He then sent a threatening text message to him, and he accused him of not taking their instructions to re-locate to South Africa.

Part of the text message reads, "iwewe mudhara une mweya wenharo kaaa, let me say this once and for all.

"Tsuro haiponi murutsva kaviri...to be warned is to be armed and it is unwise to test us..."

That led Gwitima to make a police report leading to Hakata's arrest.

He was ordered to deposit US$50 and will appear in court on July 30, 2024.
