Roots and Shoots Pvt Limited director, Douglas Richard Beattie lost US$46 000 in a car import deal after Bernedict Makore claimed that he could facilitate procurement of a Prado Land Cruiser on his behalf.

Makore, 46, of Greystone Park, appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Court facing fraud allegations.

It is alleged that on June 18, 2023, Beattie contacted Makore via phone call regarding the purchase of a 2019 Toyota Prado Landcruiser.

Makore assured Beattie that he could act as an agent and buy the vehicle from Japan for US$46 500, and that it would arrive within two to three months from the date of payment.

It is alleged that on July 19, 2023, in Borrowdale, Beattie paid US$32 500 as a down payment for the car in the presence of his fiancée, Jennifer Bristow.

Makore allegedly signed for the payment as acknowledgement of the funds.

On August 4, 2023, Beattie allegedly made an additional payment of US$14 000 to Makore and a poof of payment was signed by the two.

After three months, Makore continuously gave excuses and never delivered the vehicle.

He suddenly became evasive and the complainant then realised that he had been defrauded and decided to file a police report.

Due to the accused Makore's misrepresentation, Beattie suffered an actual prejudice of US$46 500.

Makore was ordered to appear in court on August 15.
