Simba Bhora are setting their sights on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title after a confidence-boosting 1-0 victory over Manica Diamonds at the weekend.
The win ended Manica Diamonds' 13-match unbeaten run and propelled Simba Bhora to third place on the table, just five points behind leaders FC Platinum.
Coach Tonderai Ndiraya is pleased with his team's progress but admits they need to be more ruthless in front of goal. "We created so many chances," Ndiraya said. "On a good day, we should have scored four, five goals."
Simba Bhora's profligacy was highlighted by striker Harrison Masina, who missed two clear-cut scoring opportunities. Midfielder Mthokozisi Msebe's second-minute strike proved to be the difference, but other chances fell to Tymon Machope, captain Walter Musona, and substitute Perfect Chikwende.
Ndiraya believes consistency is key to their title aspirations. "Our record in the first 17 games shows we were not as consistent as we would have liked," he admitted. "We want to find a winning streak which will take us to a good position at the end of the season."
Simba Bhora's ambitions are fueled by the backing of their president, Simba Ndoro, who invested heavily in the squad at the beginning of the season. Notable signings include goalkeeper Talbert Shumba, midfielder Msebe, the decorated Walter Musona, and striker Harrison Masina.
The club's rapid rise is remarkable considering their fight against relegation last season. "For us to be where we are at the moment, is quite a remarkable achievement," Ndiraya said. "We want to make sure that we stay up there with the best."
Their next challenge comes in the form of an away fixture against Green Fuel, followed by a home match against Highlanders.
