A tragic incident has rocked the community of Emganwini after a truck driver ran over and killed a Form 1 pupil on her way to school on Monday. The driver’s subsequent assault on the girl’s father has further compounded the community’s grief and anger.

The deceased, a 14-year-old girl, was struck by a truck driven by Fani Herbert as she crossed an unnamed road in Emganwini. The impact caused fatal head injuries, leading to her untimely death at the scene.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene, with the girl’s lifeless body lying in the middle of the road. Instead of showing remorse, the truck driver reportedly blamed the child for the accident. This callous behavior infuriated the victim’s father, who arrived at the scene shortly after the tragedy.

A confrontation ensued between the grieving father and the truck driver, resulting in a physical altercation. The driver assaulted the father, adding further trauma to an already devastating situation.

The driver has since been apprehended by the police.

In a separate incident on the same day, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a Toyota Fortuner along Nketa Drive. The driver of the vehicle is yet to produce a driver’s license.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents and urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid distractions such as using mobile phones while driving.
