The country is gearing up for a significant expansion of its cotton production, with ambitious plans to cultivate 180,000 hectares during the upcoming 2024-2025 cropping season. This strategic move aims to revitalize the once-thriving cotton industry and contribute to the nation's economic growth.

The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe  is spearheading the initiative by initiating the farmer registration process for the Presidential Input Scheme. This scheme will provide crucial inputs to farmers, empowering them to maximize their yields. COTTCO CEO, Rockie Mutenha, expressed optimism about the target, emphasizing a tiered approach to farmer support based on landholdings.

“Our focus is on establishing 180,000 hectares under cotton cultivation,” said Mutenha. “We are meticulously identifying and registering farmers to ensure they receive the necessary inputs. The distribution logistics are already in motion, and we are leaving no stone unturned.”

To curb the misuse of agricultural inputs, COTTCO has issued a stern warning to those with a history of abusing such schemes. Schools are also set to benefit from the initiative as part of the government's broader agricultural development strategy.

According to the Agricultural Marketing Authority, the previous marketing season yielded 12 million kilograms of cotton valued at US$3 million and ZWG$14 million. While these figures represent a positive step, the industry is now focused on building upon this success through the expanded planting area for the upcoming season.
