Zimbabwe has welcomed a new era of child welfare with the appointment of Ms. Etona Ekole as the UNICEF Representative. Ms. Ekole, who presented her credentials to Foreign Affairs Minister Frederick Shava today, succeeds Dr. Tajudeen Oyewale and will oversee the implementation of UNICEF’s Country Programme for 2022-2026.

Minister Shava expressed enthusiasm for Ms. Ekole’s appointment, highlighting UNICEF’s crucial role in supporting women and children. He emphasized the strong partnership between Zimbabwe and UNICEF, particularly in education, social welfare, and health. With Zimbabwe hosting the Regional World Children’s Day and assuming the SADC chair, the Minister reiterated the country’s commitment to advancing child welfare.

Ms. Ekole, a seasoned UN professional with extensive experience in leadership and advocacy, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Zimbabwe. She commended the government's commitment to child rights and pledged UNICEF’s full support for the upcoming Regional World Children’s Day celebrations and Zimbabwe’s SADC chairmanship.

A key focus of Ms. Ekole's tenure will be to build upon UNICEF’s existing work in health, nutrition, education, child protection, and water sanitation. She is determined to create a positive impact on the lives of Zimbabwean children by fostering strong partnerships, empowering communities, and advocating for child rights.
