A tragic road accident involving a Mzansi bus traveling from Zimbabwe to Johannesburg has resulted in the loss of ten lives, believed to be Zimbabwean nationals. The incident occurred near Polokwane, South Africa, just before midnight on Tuesday, August 27.
According to the South African Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, the bus overturned on the N1 around Makhado, leaving several passengers injured. The department's acting MEC spokesperson, Phuti Lekganyane, confirmed that all ten deceased were foreign nationals, including five males and five females.
Initial reports indicate that the accident happened when the bus driver, who was reportedly new to the route, drove over a roundabout at excessive speed. The loss of control led to the bus overturning, resulting in the tragic fatalities and injuries.
The injured passengers were promptly transported to various hospitals in Makhado for medical treatment. Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed her deep condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
