3 Injured in Kombi collision in town

Three people were injured in a road traffic accident that occurred today at around 12 noon at the corner of Sam Njuoma Street and Leoinid Brezhnev Avenue.

According to eyewitnesses, a Toyota Hiace suddenly turned right straight into the lane of Passo vehicle. The Passo hit the side of the Kombi, resulting in severe damage to the front of the smaller vehicle and leaving three occupants injured.

“The Commuter Omnibus suddenly turned, not noticing the other car, which led to the Passo crashing into it and destroying its front,” said one eyewitness at the scene.

Zim Now was on the scene within seconds of the crash.

Concerns were raised over the delayed response from emergency services. Police officers arrived about 50 minutes after the accident.  People interviewed at the scene asked why police manning the intersection at Herbert Chitepo and Sam Nujoma less than 100 metres away could not have been the first responders.

Adding to public concern, witnesses also reported seeing another police officer nearby who was busy loading his private vehicle destined for Mazowe instead of assisting at the accident scene.

 More than an hour passed without an ambulance arriving at the scene in spite of there being several medical facilities in the area. Members of the public said there should be a hotline that people can call in case of road crashes so that police and medical teams can be dispatched immediately.
