The annual Mai Hondo Tournaments, a longstanding platform for nurturing young football talent in Zimbabwe, kicked off in Mutare on Friday, August 30th. This year's tournament, now in its eighth edition, promises to be even more exciting with the addition of netball and increased offerings for participating teams.

A total of 16 boys' and 16 girls' teams have registered for the two-day event, showcasing the growing popularity of the tournament. According to Blessing Mutsaka, the tournament coordinator, the inclusion of netball is part of the ongoing expansion of the competition.

"We are thrilled to host the Mai Hondo Tournaments once again," said Mutsaka. "We anticipate witnessing some of the highest-quality junior football in the country. This is an excellent opportunity for national selectors to identify promising young talent."

The tournament features a unique prize structure that ensures every participating team receives a reward. Over the years, the Mai Hondo Tournaments have distributed over 100 sets of complete uniforms and training bibs, as well as over 350 balls. Additionally, the tournament offers school fees vouchers, school materials, grocery hampers, trophies, and training scholarships for coaches.

"We believe in providing tangible benefits to the young athletes who participate in our tournament," explained Mutsaka. "By offering prizes that support their education and football development, we aim to make a lasting impact on their lives."

The Mai Hondo Tournaments have been evaluated by former national team players, current Premier Soccer League players and coaches, and ZIFA technical staff. The competition, which began in 2015 exclusively for Mutare teams, has gradually expanded to attract participants from Harare, Masvingo, Mashonaland East, the Midlands, and Matabeleland North.

In 2017, Ajax Academy of Mbare emerged as the champions of the Mai Hondo tournament.

As the tournament continues to grow, it aims to tap into rural areas such as Chipinge, Buhera, Mutasa, Binga, and others to complement the Nash secondary schools soccer tournament
