Talent that beckons for the spotlight: The story of a filmmaker Tanaka Chips

Emerging with a promising flair from his earliest days, the realization of a dream demanded unwavering passion and relentless dedication until it materialized into a vivid reality. The blossom of his talent reached maturity, compelling him to embark on the path of music infused with creativity, crafting an artistic expression that captivates many.

The journey commenced with a subtle fragrance hinting at possibilities, as Tanaka Chips, the ambitious artist, found his roots in Rusununguko Primary School in Mufakose. It was during his formative years in primary school that the seeds of his musical aspirations were sown, blending street vernacular with the rhythms of Jamaica to cultivate a dancehall potential. Transitioning from this genre to urban Hip Hop during his A-level studies marked a pivotal shift in his artistic evolution.

Simultaneously, his passion for acting, nurtured since childhood through church performances, flourished at the same high school where he engaged in the drama club. Under the guidance of industry luminary Chido Musasiwa, the club garnered three prestigious accolades at the 'Let them Trust School Arts Festival' for three consecutive years.

The allure of the arts and filmmaking industry blossomed from witnessing successful endeavors, culminating in the establishment of his production company in 2019. His inaugural film, "Nomvelo,"centered on the challenges faced by girls in third-world countries, marked his foray into the film industry.

Despite the industry's challenges, Tanaka persevered, juggling dual careers and navigating the demanding landscape. Grateful for the mentorship and support of Sydney Taivavashe, who provided essential tools and guidance, Tanaka successfully produced five short films, a testament to his resilience and talent.

Inspired by the impact of his work on others, Tanaka's current project, 'Ambassador of Riches,' an EP aimed at empowering the youth, reflects his commitment to motivating aspiring individuals facing adversities. While setbacks like the rejection of grant applications tested his resolve, his admiration for global icons like Chris Brown, Drake, Joyner Lucas, and filmmakers Zack Snyder, Peter Jackson, and James Cameron continues to shape his artistic vision.

Looking ahead, Tanaka envisions expanding his musical reach internationally, blending Shona and English in his lyrics to showcase Zimbabwean culture to a global audience. In the realm of film, his sights are set on Hollywood. His collaborative project 'Rafiki' with socialite Tariro Gezi, sponsored by prominent companies like Doves, Steers, and Emras, addresses pertinent issues affecting youth, such as mental health and substance abuse, while his Extended Play is poised for release this year.
