Three members of a five-man armed robbery gang have appeared before a Bulawayo court, facing charges of impersonating public officials, attempted extortion, and extortion.
The suspects, Munyaradzi Chakarakupa, Victor Jaja, and Tawanda Mangi, are accused of using the names of the Mnangagwa family and the Office of the President to extort money from mining companies in Matabeleland.
According to court documents, the trio identified themselves as Sean Mnangagwa's security team and members of the Police Protection Unit. They allegedly approached Bulawayo-based lawyer Dumisani Dube, demanding US$300,000 for protection.
Dube, who refused to pay the initial amount, succumbed to pressure after receiving death threats and eventually handed over US$55,300 to the accused on different occasions.
The gang later targeted Fools Investment (Pvt) Ltd, claiming to be directors of the company and demanding US$200,000 each. Jaja presented an official card from the Office of the President as identification.
Dube reported the matter to Sean Mnangagwa, who advised him to contact the police. The authorities subsequently arrested the three suspects.
The prosecution and the investigating officer, Edmore Runganga, opposed the accused's bail application, citing flight risks and the possibility of interfering with witnesses. Their accomplices are still at large.
