Police red flag baby dumping as cases are recorded weekly

Police say cases on baby dumping are on the increase and are appealing to the public to provide tip offs so the culprits can be arrested.

“We are recording one or two cases of baby dumping every week,” national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told Zim Now.

This comes as police in Harare are investigating at least three cases of baby dumping that occurred this month.

In the latest case a foetus body covered in a sack was found at a dumping site in Budiriro 5B.

Another case is that of a deceased male infant found at a dumpsite near Morgan Zintec College, Harare, on November 8.

On the same day a foetus body was found dumped under the bridge at Home Industry area.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the police are appealing for members of the public who may have information in any of the cases to come forward and assist the police with investigations.

A Mudzi woman recently got away with a suspended sentence after she confessed to baby dumping months after the act.

Abortions are illegal in Zimbabwe but it is an open secret that a wide array of services are available. Some medical practitioners discreetly provide abortion services and there are also non-medical people in communities offering the same.
