Pravin Gordhan
Former South African minister Pravin Gordhan, a key figure in the anti-apartheid struggle and a longtime member of the African National Congress, has died at the age of 75 due to cancer.
He passed away in hospital early Friday, surrounded by loved ones.
Gordhan was a vital player in South Africa's transition to democracy and had served in multiple key government roles, including finance minister and head of the revenue service.
He was known for his strong stance against corruption and his public criticism of former president Jacob Zuma, even while serving in Zuma’s cabinet.
Gordhan retired from active politics after the ANC's loss of its parliamentary majority in the May elections. President Cyril Ramaphosa described him as an "outstanding leader" known for his intellect, integrity, and tireless activism.
“We have lost an outstanding leader whose unassuming persona belied the depth of intellect, integrity and energy with which he undertook his activism , his duty as a parliamentarian and his roles as a member of cabinet.”
