South Africa to continue its genocide case against Israel

South Africa, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

The case, initiated in late 2023, accuses Israel of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention through its military actions in Gaza. South Africa plans to submit new evidence to the court next month, aiming to demonstrate that Israel is responsible for acts of genocide in Palestine.

This legal move is part of a broader international effort, with countries like Türkiye, Nicaragua, Palestine, Spain, Mexico, Libya, and Colombia joining the case.

The ICJ has already issued several provisional orders calling for Israel to halt its offensive, particularly in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, in response to the rising humanitarian crisis, with casualties exceeding 40,000.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Israeli diplomats are working to lobby U.S. lawmakers to pressure South Africa into dropping the case.

However, South Africa remains resolute in its pursuit of justice, emphasising that the case will continue until the court reaches a final decision.
