Burnett Motors Dealership accused of duping clients

A prominent car dealership, Burnett Motors Dealership (Pvt) Ltd, trading as Creative Auto, is facing serious allegations of fraud after being accused of duping its clients.

The dealership is currently embroiled in a legal battle following complaints from two major institutions: the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) and ZESA Holdings.

According to court documents, HIT awarded Burnett Motors a tender to supply three Toyota Hilux vehicles in November 2022. Despite being paid a substantial sum of money, the dealership failed to deliver the vehicles as promised. Instead, Burnett Motors purchased the vehicles from Chinese nationals who had imported them under the Immigrant Rebate, a scheme that offers tax benefits to returning Zimbabweans. This violated the terms of the tender agreement, which stipulated that the vehicles should be imported directly by the dealership.

As a result of Burnett Motors' actions, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority seized the vehicles from HIT after discovering that the dealership had not paid the necessary Customs & Excise duties and taxes.

ZESA Holdings also fell victim to Burnett Motors' alleged fraudulent practices. The power utility awarded the dealership a tender to supply a Toyota Hilux vehicle in March 2023. However, Burnett Motors once again purchased the vehicle from Chinese nationals who had imported it under the Immigrant Rebate.
