Farmers start planting

The majority of farmers across the country have started planting, taking advantage of the current high moisture content occasioned by the good rains.

Meteorological Services Department head of forecasting James Ngoma said there will be more showers today, but the rest of this week will be sunny and hot in most parts of the country.

Farmers can plant maize when they have received 25mm of rain or more, according to agricultural experts.

Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union president Shadreck Makombe urged farmers to take advantage of the current soil moisture to intensify planting as delays would result in lower yields.

“Moisture content is very high, so farmers should take advantage of the rains to maximize production. Right now, farmers are busy with planting,” he said.

Makombe noted that climate change and variability incidences, make it imperative for farmers to make use of information on weather provided.

While urging farmers to intensify planting, he advised them to seek advice when in doubt, adding that it is critical for farmers to know their regions so that they planted crops which suited their areas.

He also said that farmers who had no irrigation should opt for short-term varieties.

Zimbabwe needs 2,2 million tonnes of maize for human and livestock consumption and is targeting three million tonnes this farming season, which will allow a build-up of stocks.

Government plans to realise a US$8,2 billion agriculture industry economy by next year.
