Highlanders FC finally snapped their winless streak in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over city rivals Arenel Movers at Barboufields Stadium.
The Bosso faithful were treated to a scintillating first-half performance from their team, which set the tone for the match. Lynoth Chikuhwa opened the scoring in the 40th minute, converting a rebound after McKinnon Mushore's shot hit the crossbar. Substitute Gillian Nyathi sealed the deal in stoppage time with a stunning long-range effort that left Arenel's goalkeeper Aaron Ngwenya helpless.
Highlanders head coach Kelvin Kaindu expressed his delight at the victory, which marked a significant turnaround for his team after a series of disappointing results. "It wasn't an easy game," Kaindu said. "In the first round, we struggled against local teams, but today we had to work hard for the victory. The two goals we scored were beautiful, and we could have scored more if we had capitalized on all our chances."
Despite dominating possession, Arenel Movers were unable to break down the Highlanders defense and ultimately paid the price for their missed opportunities. Philani Ncube, the Arenel coach, acknowledged his team's superior performance but admitted that their inability to convert chances cost them the match.
