The Chief Justice of Zimbabwe, Honourable Justice Luke Malaba, along with the Judicial Service Commission, judges, magistrates, and members of the Judicial Service, have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the Nare family following the passing of Retired Judge, Honourable Justice Selo Masole Nare. Justice Nare passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in South Africa.
“Our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife and children, during this difficult time,” said the Chief Justice in a statement.
Justice Nare, who dedicated his life to upholding justice and protecting fundamental human rights, leaves behind a distinguished legacy in Zimbabwe’s legal system. His contributions, particularly in advancing workers' rights, have had a profound impact on the nation’s jurisprudence and touched the lives of many.
Born on December 28, 1943, in Gwanda, Justice Nare began his career in public service as a primary school teacher in 1964, serving for nine years. He transitioned to the Ministry of Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs in 1973, where he started as a court interpreter. Following his legal studies at the University of South Africa, he was sworn in as a magistrate in 1981. Justice Nare rose through the ranks to become a regional magistrate before being appointed a judge of the Administrative Court in 2001. Five years later, he was appointed to the Labour Court bench, where he served until his retirement in 2013.
The judicial community remembers Justice Nare not only for his legal expertise but also for his steadfast commitment to justice and human dignity. His passing marks the end of a career that shaped Zimbabwean law, particularly in labour matters.
