The government has announced a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement with Bitumen World to rehabilitate the Beitbridge-Byo-Vic Falls Road, a critical link in Zimbabwe’s transportation network. This development follows the civil engineering company’s previous abandonment of the project due to non-payment issues.
The project will focus on upgrading, rehabilitating, widening, and dualizing specific sections of the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road. Unlike the complete overhaul undertaken for the Harare-Beitbridge highway, this initiative will target areas most in need of repair, reflecting a more strategic approach to infrastructure enhancement.
Currently, the Bulawayo-Vic Falls road is in a severely deteriorated state, which has adversely affected traffic flow and connectivity along the vital North-South Corridor—an essential route for trade and tourism in the region. Bitumen World plans to recoup its investment through tollgate fees, with hopes that increased accessibility will lead to a rise in traffic once the road is passable.
Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws millions of tourists annually, playing a significant role in Zimbabwe's economy. However, many potential visitors have been opting to fly in due to the road's poor condition. The upcoming enhancements are expected to facilitate better access to this key tourist destination, thereby stimulating local businesses and creating job opportunities in surrounding areas. Additionally, the upgraded road is anticipated to alleviate congestion and reduce travel times, making the journey more appealing for both domestic and international travelers.
“This project involves upgrade, rehabilitate, widen, and dualise certain sections of the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road,” announced the government, indicating that work will be done where necessary, rather than a complete overhaul as that done for the Harare-Beitbridge highway.
This partnership with Bitumen World marks the second major road infrastructure project the government has engaged in with a private player, following a successful collaboration involving Tensor, Fossil, and Masimba on the Mbudzi Interchange in Harare.
The Beitbridge-Byo-Vic Falls project will include improvements to the existing road surface, enhanced drainage systems, and safety measures to ensure a smoother and safer travel experience. Bitumen World has also established a plant in Bulawayo to support the construction efforts.
Construction is set to commence in the coming months, with a focus on minimizing disruption to road users. Local communities are expected to see direct benefits from the project, with employment opportunities during the construction phase and increased traffic flow once the upgrades are complete.
This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to enhance infrastructure across the country, supporting sustainable economic development. The successful rehabilitation of the Beitbridge-Byo-Vic Falls Road is viewed as a crucial step toward revitalizing Zimbabwe’s transport infrastructure and promoting economic growth.
