A man accused of using social media to defraud unsuspecting victims has appeared in court.
Pedzi Stephen was brought before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates' Courts, facing charges of fraud. He was remanded in custody.
According to prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, Stephen allegedly placed an advertisement on Facebook in April, claiming to specialize in security wire fencing.
The complainant's husband, based in South Africa, saw the ad and expressed interest in fencing their rural home in Neshuro Village, Masvingo. He communicated with Stephen, who instructed him to pay a deposit of US$1,000.
On April 10, 2024, the complainant's husband contacted his wife and instructed her to go to 7 Speke Avenue in Harare to make the payment.
The complainant went to the address, where she found Stephen alone in a room. She handed over the US$1,000, and Stephen issued her a receipt, numbered 001208, as proof of payment. He promised to start the job within three days.
However, after the promised period passed, no work had been done. When the complainant attempted to follow up, Stephen repeatedly made excuses and gave false promises.
Sensing something was amiss, the complainant returned to Stephen’s address, only to find the place locked and seemingly abandoned.
This prompted her to file a police report, leading to Stephen's arrest.
