Teen Rescue Mission Director Abraham Matuka received the Service Community Entrepreneurship Award at the National Iconic Entrepreneurs’ Awards at Cresta Hotel, Harare on 11 November, 2022.

Makuta won the award through his work at TRM, a community-based organisation that aims to educate, raise awareness, create sustainable life skills projects and provide counselling to teenagers and youths on the dangers of drug and substance abuse and indulging in early sexual activities that lead to early child pregnancies in both rural and urban areas across the country.

The organisation has managed to steer away about 500 young people from drugs and criminal activities with 124 graduating this year from the life skill courses.

Speaking to ZimNow, Matuka said the most important thing is to empower young people amidst the increase in drug abuse which has become a pandemic.

“Drug abuse has become a big challenge in minors, with idleness being at the centre of the problem. Our main goal is to take the youth away from drugs but also assist them with tangible solutions.

“As TRS, we have managed to secure partnership with Young Africa in Chitungwiza, which gives life skill courses to youths and we have to date taken 379 youths for life skills.

“TRS has taken up several projects, including producing cleaning detergents, dancing clubs, poetry and singing. These programmes have made young people realise their potential through art with a sober mind,” he said.

Matuka also revealed that the organisation secured land in Chitungwiza where 230 young people have already registered for participation.
